The 3 Things Every Worker Should Know

About the NDIS

1. The Funding Categories

Know the difference between:

  • Core Supports (day-to-day help)

  • Capacity Building (goals and skills)

  • Capital Supports (equipment and modifications)

Why it matters:

You’ll better understand what you’re supporting — and avoid crossing boundaries (like promising services that fall outside your client’s plan).

2. Your Role as a Support Worker

You are not:

  • A case manager

  • A plan coordinator

  • A therapist (unless qualified)

You are a skilled professional supporting someone to live well — with the limits and expectations that come with that.

We help you understand what’s in-bounds and what’s not — so you can work with clarity.

3. Record Keeping & Communication

Even if you’re not the one doing the invoices, you still play a key role in:

  • Keeping clear shift notes

  • Reporting concerns

  • Staying transparent with the team

This isn’t about red tape. It’s about protecting you, your client, and the people who rely on your documentation to make decisions.

Why Most Workers Were Never Taught This

Let’s be honest: most training is either too clinical, too vague, or aimed at providers, not workers.

That’s why Sparks Academy built its own NDIS Fundamentals course — designed specifically for frontline support workers who want to do the right thing without drowning in jargon.

What You’ll Learn in Our NDIS Fundamentals Module

  • The structure of the NDIS (and how it applies to your role)

  • What the expectations are for independent vs employed workers

  • Common scenarios that trip people up — and how to handle them

  • What to do when something goes wrong (yes, we cover this too)

This isn’t theory. It’s a practical crash course so you can feel more confident and less stressed — and keep your work aligned with what’s required.

Want to stop guessing and start getting it right?

Join our NDIS Fundamentals course and get clear, practical training that supports your work from day one.

Hi, I’m Kim!

I’m the founder of Sunshine Family Support and Crushing Goals, established in 2020 from my personal journey navigating neurodivergence. As a mother to three incredible neurodivergent children, I intimately understand the challenges and joys of this path. The core of Sunshine Family Support is intertwined with my experiences—I struggled to find suitable caregivers for my family, leading me to develop a hiring method through trial and error. This method now assists other families in similar situations. Through many interviews, a realisation struck me: my next mission involves helping individuals improve their support work skills. This endeavour not only furthers careers but also improves the standard of care in the disability support space.
